‘Bees in Lockdown’

Christina Lowry
Bees in Lockdown (2022)

The current biosecurity threat in New South Wales inspired the creation of this piece. The title was a recent news headline regarding the emergency response to the detection of the bee parasite varroa mite. Bee colony deaths affect honey production as well as the pollination of certain crops. The impact of the loss of the Australian honey bee industry would be widely felt. Feral European bee hives are sparking debate.

The image features a dead European bee on the right of the table top, and a native Carpenter bee on a yellow rose. A reminder of the importance of such lovely little creatures.
