Logan Eco Action Festival & Logan Art Gallery
Sunday was amazing! Seeing one’s idea in a sketchbook turn into something with so many moving parts is rather wonderful.
The rain held off, though the wind put an end to our newspaper table cloth.
I spent the day inviting festival goers to make porcelain bird skulls with me beneath the Logan Art Gallery marquee. I explained that I am doing my Masters of Visual Arts degree at Griffith University and I have an upcoming solo show at Logan Art gallery in July. That I am creating an large installation with the help of the community in order to recognise the 25 endangered birds in the Logan region, and in an act of reciprocity with nature, each skull will be available for sale by donation to a nature charity. I had real bird skulls for inspiration and I showed participants a simple way to get started by creating a ball with the clay and then pinching out a beak. I reiterated some or all of the above to each participant until it felt effortless.
Our stall was swamped all day. I took one quick break and walked past Dr Karl on my way to the bathroom.
The gallery staff and I filled all the boxes and I brought home over 200 bird skulls for the installation!
I have possibly another 300 in my studio from previous workshops, and I still have ten drop in sessions at the residency to produce more birds with the community.
I really want to thank everyone who participated, all the staff and volunteers at the gallery for their time and help, and for making this all possible. xx
