De mortuarum avium bibliotheca vitrine

$2,200.00
sold out

De mortuarum avium bibliotheca (From the library of extinct birds)

2025

wood, glass, cardboard, legal tape
800 x 410 x 300 mm

This vitrine presents thirty-six meticulously recreated archival boxes, each inscribed in pencil with the Latin name of an extinct or presumed-extinct Australian bird species. Based on original storage containers held in Queensland museum collections, these replicas serve as elegiac placeholders for avian bodies now permanently absent. Their deliberate emptiness underscores the irreversible loss of these species from both the natural environment and the collective public consciousness. The sculpture is tied off with legal tape, a nod to the red tape the artist encountered in being denied permission to 3d scan extinct bird specimens in the museum’s collection.
